Candle tunneling is a common issue caused by an incomplete wax melt during early burns. The good news is that even a candle with an established “bad memory” can often be corrected using a simple heat-retention method.
Step-by-Step Foil Method to Reset Candle Memory
Follow these steps carefully to restore an even melt pool:
1. Light the candle and allow the flame to stabilize.
2. Prepare a sheet of aluminum foil large enough to wrap around the candle top.
3. Fold the foil and shape it into a loose funnel around the rim of the candle.
4. Leave 1.5–2 inches of open space at the top to allow proper airflow.
5. Let the candle burn for approximately 10 minutes.
6. Carefully remove the foil once the wax has melted evenly across the surface.
The foil reflects heat inward, helping the outer wax soften and melt down to the edges. This process resets the candle’s burn pattern and promotes more consistent melting in future use.
Safety Notes During Correction
Always supervise the candle while using this method. If the wax begins to soften excessively at the edges or shows signs of overflow, extinguish the flame and remove the foil immediately. Never leave a candle unattended during corrective burning.
By applying this technique properly, tunneling can usually be corrected, extending candle life and improving overall performance.
